PRACTICAL BUSINESS GUIDE

Rent, Professional Fee और Contractor Payments पर TDS: Business Checklist

Check payer, recipient, payment type and period before deciding the deduction requirement.

Income Tax2 min readUpdated 2026-10-29English guide
Read for preparation. Confirm the current official requirements for your facts and reporting period before filing or paying.

TDS obligations are transaction- and taxpayer-specific. Rent, professional services and contractor payments may fall under different rules, thresholds, timing and reporting requirements. Verify the applicable period and provision rather than applying one rate to every expense or copying old section codes into the new Tax Year. [1] [2]

Set up a payment review process

Maintain recipient identity/PAN and relevant declarations, invoice/contract details, residential status and payment totals. Identify credit-versus-payment timing rules and any valid certificate affecting deduction. Review reimbursements and bundled contracts on their facts, not merely the invoice heading.

Complete the compliance chain

Deduct where required, deposit under the correct period/head, prepare the applicable statement and provide the relevant certificate. Reconcile challans, deductee details and the expense ledger. A tax deposit without accurate reporting may still leave recipient credit or compliance problems. [1]

Practical preparation checklist

  • Payer/recipient status and valid identity details.
  • Payment classification, cumulative amounts and timing.
  • Applicable rate/certificate and deposit working.
  • Statement, certificate and challan reconciliation.

Illustrative example

A business engages a vendor under a mixed contract. Its accounts team should review the actual service arrangement before selecting a TDS category. Using the most familiar ledger code may not be appropriate.

Avoid this mistake

Do not assume a small invoice or recipient’s verbal statement removes TDS. Check current thresholds and conditions. Do not share the taxpayer’s signing credentials with an unauthorised person; use a defined review and approval process for deposits and statements.
