A salary certificate covers the employment information it reports; it does not automatically include all the taxpayer’s other income. Rent, interest, dividends and investment sales need separate classification and records. The correct ITR form and schedules depend on the complete facts and relevant year. [1] [2]
Separate recurring income and asset sales
Distinguish bank interest and dividends from proceeds of selling investments. For property, retain rent, ownership, municipal/payment and loan records as relevant. Do not treat the whole sale receipt as taxable profit or assume an investment-app summary answers every tax question.
Reconcile with information statements
Compare the income/transaction list with AIS and other period-specific statements. Explain duplicates, ownership shares, incorrect reporting and timing differences with evidence. Review tax credits and advance-tax implications separately; salary TDS may not cover all additional liability. [3]
Practical preparation checklist
- Salary records from all employers.
- Bank/deposit interest and property income evidence.
- Investment purchase/sale and expense records.
- Information-statement reconciliation and tax-credit review.
Illustrative example
An employee changes jobs and also earns deposit interest. Supplying only the last employer’s certificate can omit earlier salary and non-salary income. A consolidated source list helps avoid that omission.
Avoid this mistake
Do not assume that tax deducted by an employer makes every other receipt tax-free or that an AIS entry always equals taxable income. Review the actual nature of each item and the appropriate form before approving the return.
