An ITR should be based on complete records rather than a single Form 16 or a prefilled portal figure. Collect documents for every income source, tax credit, deduction and disclosure relevant to the taxpayer and period. Form instructions and information statements help identify gaps but do not replace the underlying evidence. [1] [2]
Build the income and tax folder
Include salary certificates, bank interest, property/rent records, investment transactions and business/professional records as applicable. Download the correct information and annual-tax statements for the period. Check deducted/paid tax against certificates and challans, and keep a list of differences requiring correction.
Prepare claims and disclosures
Collect eligible deduction/exemption evidence and review the selected regime. Identify loans, losses, foreign assets/income and other disclosures required by the chosen form. Give the preparer factual explanations for large or unusual transactions rather than leaving them to infer purpose from a bank narration.
Practical preparation checklist
- Identity/contact/bank details and correct tax period.
- Income-source records and statement reconciliation.
- TDS/TCS/advance/self-assessment tax evidence.
- Eligible claims, losses and other required disclosures.
Illustrative example
A taxpayer supplies only a salary certificate but has interest from several bank accounts. The preparer needs those records too; a salary certificate cannot establish the completeness of the return.
Avoid this mistake
Do not send passwords or full sensitive documents through a public comment/enquiry form. Use an authorised private channel and review the final computation before submission. A document checklist is not a promise that every claim is allowable; each depends on the applicable rules and facts.
