Reverse charge changes the person responsible for paying GST for specified transactions. It does not mean every purchase from an unregistered supplier attracts tax, nor that every expense with no supplier GST is exempt. The relevant notification, supply classification and recipient conditions must be read together. [1]
Classify the underlying supply
Record the service or goods actually received, supplier status and location, recipient status and any exemption conditions. Use the invoice and agreement, not a ledger label alone. Imports, transport and professional-service arrangements may require different checks. Do not copy a generic RCM list without its conditions and effective date.
Prepare the reporting trail
Once liability is established, document the applicable value, time of supply, tax heads, payment and required documents. Check the permitted payment mechanism and when any corresponding credit becomes available. Reconcile the RCM working with the relevant return fields and accounting entry; avoid treating payment and credit as an automatic net-zero exercise. [2]
Practical preparation checklist
- Expense ledger and agreements for potentially notified supplies.
- Supplier/recipient registration and location details.
- Applicable notification and exemption review.
- Tax-payment, return and subsequent credit working.
Illustrative example
An accounts team books freight under one expense code. Before applying RCM, it must review the transport document, supplier type and contractual conditions. Different suppliers in the same ledger may need different treatment.
Avoid this mistake
Do not apply a blanket percentage to all unregistered purchases or assume a supplier invoice resolves recipient liability. Keep the analysis by transaction class and tax period. A routine filing package should clearly state whether it includes RCM classification review or relies on client-approved data.
