GST return support is not one identical task for every taxpayer. The relevant return, period, filing frequency, transaction volume and reconciliation needs determine the work. GSTR-3B is a summary return workflow; the portal’s system-generated data still requires review against the taxpayer’s records. [1]
Define the engagement before sharing files
Specify the GSTIN, periods, returns, number of invoices, branches, import/export transactions and any earlier-year corrections. Separate preparation from reconciliation, notice response and books cleanup. Agree a cutoff for complete documents and a person authorised to approve the figures. Filing-day urgency cannot fix an incomplete ledger.
Close the period with evidence
Provide sales and purchase registers, debit/credit notes, reverse-charge details and relevant portal statements. The reviewer should explain exceptions and the proposed liability/credit. After approval, preserve the filed return, acknowledgement and tax-payment evidence. A challan alone is not proof that the return was filed. [1] [2]
Practical preparation checklist
- GSTIN, filing period and monthly/quarterly status.
- Sales, purchases, debit/credit notes and exception register.
- GSTR-2B/IMS review and liability/ITC reconciliation inputs.
- Written approval, payment record and filing acknowledgement.
Illustrative example
Two businesses each have a single GSTIN. One has ten domestic invoices; another has thousands of marketplace transactions and export adjustments. Their preparation effort and quoted scope are different even when both request “one GST return.”
Avoid this mistake
Do not compare professional prices without checking transaction limits and included reconciliation. Zeofox’s current quote should specify the work; this article does not promise a universal per-return price. Tax, late fee and interest are separate from professional remuneration.
