GST Return Mismatch Notice: Books और Returns कैसे मिलाएँ?

Respond to the actual notice issue with a supported period-wise explanation.

Read for preparation. Confirm the current official requirements for your facts and reporting period before filing or paying.

A mismatch notice or portal communication should first be identified by its form, period, stated discrepancy and response route. Differences between books, GSTR-1, GSTR-3B and credit statements can have different causes. A reconciliation is evidence for the response, not an automatic cancellation of a demand. [1] [2]

Rebuild the comparison

Download the relevant filed returns and books for the same period. Identify amendments, credit notes, advances, timing differences, exempt supplies, reverse charge and ledger adjustments. Keep tax-head differences separate. Do not compare gross receipts with taxable turnover without explaining the bridge.

Prepare a controlled response

Set out each issue, the taxpayer’s explanation and the supporting document reference. Where an error is accepted, obtain advice on the appropriate payment/correction route. Track the actual deadline, submission acknowledgement and further questions. An informal phone discussion should not be treated as a filed reply. [2]

Practical preparation checklist

  • Complete notice, attachments, reference and response deadline.
  • Filed returns and matching books for the disputed periods.
  • Item-wise reconciliation with evidence links.
  • Reviewed reply, payment/correction decisions and acknowledgement.

Illustrative example

A prior-period credit note is reflected differently in sales reporting and accounts. A month-level total can look inconsistent even where the annual bridge explains it. The reply should show the exact entries and applicable treatment, not merely assert that the difference is a timing issue.

Avoid this mistake

Do not ignore an automated communication or submit a generic denial. Preserve the original notice and avoid sharing portal passwords in open messages. A filing-only engagement and a notice-response engagement are different scopes that should be agreed before work begins.
