Selling through an e-commerce platform requires a case-specific GST analysis. Registration obligations and exceptions depend on the supplier, goods/services, state and platform arrangement. A platform onboarding request and a statutory requirement are related but not identical questions. Do not assume every online seller has the same treatment. [1]
Describe the actual selling arrangement
Record whether you own the stock, act as a service provider, sell across state borders or store goods in marketplace warehouses. Identify who invoices the buyer and who receives payment. Explain returns, discounts and platform charges. These facts help the reviewer examine registration and ongoing reporting requirements.
Plan beyond onboarding
Before activating sales, confirm GSTIN mapping, business address, billing data and marketplace statements. Explain how you will reconcile gross sales, customer returns, platform deductions and bank settlements. A net settlement deposited by a marketplace is not automatically the figure to use as turnover. Supporting seller guidance should be read with the current legislation. [1]
Practical preparation checklist
- Goods/services and states in which stock or operations exist.
- Seller agreement and invoicing/settlement model.
- Any applicable exception and its conditions documented.
- A system for monthly sales, returns and settlement reports.
Illustrative example
A seller receives ₹90,000 after a platform deducts commission from gross sales. The registration and return analysis must start from the underlying supplies and deductions, not treat ₹90,000 as a complete description of revenue.
Avoid this mistake
Do not register in every state merely because deliveries go there, or assume one registration covers every warehouse. Review the business establishments and supply facts. Platform support can help with onboarding, but a tax conclusion requires the applicable rules and genuine records.
