Composition and regular GST are different compliance arrangements. Eligibility, restrictions, tax collection, input-credit treatment and return/payment workflows must be examined under the applicable provisions and current notifications. The simplest-looking option is not necessarily suitable for a business’s sales channels. [1]
Start with the business model
List the goods/services supplied, states served, online channels and customer types. Establish whether the business meets the current composition conditions and whether any activity disqualifies it. Ask how customers’ input-credit needs affect commercial pricing. Keep the legal eligibility assessment separate from the profit comparison.
Compare total commercial impact
Prepare sample purchases and sales under each eligible option. Consider tax cost embedded in purchases, billing presentation, recordkeeping and compliance support. Use the same sales assumptions in both scenarios. A scheme switch also needs a transition review; opening stock, earlier credit and effective dates should not be handled by simply changing an invoice heading.
Practical preparation checklist
- PAN-wise turnover and current eligibility assessment.
- Sales channels, interstate activity and nature of supplies.
- Customer input-credit expectations and sample purchase costs.
- Transition plan, effective date and filing responsibilities.
Illustrative example
A small trader mostly supplies businesses that request input-credit-compatible invoices. A lower apparent tax rate may not compensate for losing those customers or for embedded purchase tax. The decision should compare complete commercial outcomes after eligibility is established.
Avoid this mistake
Do not describe composition as “GST without returns” or assume every small service provider qualifies under the same rules as a trader. Obtain a written assessment and verify the current portal option before changing registration settings.
